In the UK, Sotheby’s is set to auction two unique bottles of wine — 1.5-liter magnums of Château Lafite Rothschild 1870. These bottles had spent more than a century lying untouched in the cellars of Glamis Castle — simply forgotten.
The story sounds almost like a detective novel. In 1971, wine expert Michael Broadbent visited the castle for the first time, examined the archives, and discovered that the 13th Earl of Strathmore had originally purchased 48 bottles of this wine directly from Château Lafite Rothschild.
At the time, however, the wine failed to impress — it was considered too tannic. The bottles were placed in the cellar and never thought about again. Years later, Broadbent finally opened one of them — and the result was astonishing. The wine had been preserved almost perfectly: deep color, чистый аромат, no signs of oxidation, and an exceptionally balanced taste.
The starting price is estimated at around $50,000 per bottle.
