The term “semi-sweet” refers to the amount of residual sugar, not the quality of the wine.
According to the classification of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), this category includes wines with a sugar content above the level defined for semi-dry wines, but no more than 45 grams per litre.
A good semi-sweet wine should not taste like syrup. Its sweetness should be balanced by acidity. That balance makes you want to take another sip rather than immediately reach for a glass of water.
When choosing a semi-sweet wine, don’t look only at the words on the label. Pay attention to the grape variety, region, producer, and recommended serving temperature.
