Armenia is one of the earliest grape growing and processing society in the world. Armenian winemaking dates back at least 6000 years. Wine production became industrialized starting in the 1870s. During the Soviet period winemaking was greatly developed in Armenia, but the disintegration of the Soviet Union led to a temporary collapse in the wine industry. Recently, wine producers have begun regenerating vineyards and establishing new wineries. The traditional labels of Armenian wines were resumed, and there were established new varieties. The resurrection of economy gave a new birth to the wine industry in Armenia. Nowadays there are more than 50 wine producers in Armenia.
